Cars, planes and Boats!
Norway has become a leader in this new conception, while many who started the trend such as Tesla are going out with financial costs running to high. Many countries claim to have something to develop in the area, but it will be some time before we see a real all electric powered vehicle, rather than a battery operated one?
Battery is not bad but the technology for it has not changed much in the last one hundred years so apart from solar and alternative energies we will just have to wait and see is there really any alternative to fossil fuels even in the near future!
We do not get to hear to much of what is going on in the developing world when it come to this type of technology and what breakthroughs that they have made with alternatives to fossil extraction fuels!

Flying Boats Today? Part-Two.
Viable usages!
We tend to think what was popular seventy years ago would not be today, but many nations with little land and plenty of water are considering the re-introduction of the flying boats to save the development of prime agricultural lands!
Canada, China, Germany and Russia lead the way in flying boats, but the U.S and Japan have revitalised their own boats to re-join their maritime fleets. The flying boat is a very versatile platform, with the obvious they can also be used for military and civil transportation of good and people!
Their advantages are long range and the ability to land on the sea working with shipping in various roles, more to do with the military. Both Japan and the U.S.A. at one time used their aircraft in the search and rescue role and this is now a viable option once more to cover their vast coastlines and islands?

The Coast Guards. Part-Two.
Border patrol to people Trafficking.
At times we do live in a horrible world, with people taking advantage and exploiting those trying to escape poverty and war?
The role of this type of shipping has developed from smuggling goods and contraband to know recovering dead drowned bodies. Narcotics is still a major problem and so is illegal fishing and the wrecking of boats to claim insurance.
Seas have become places to cross in flimsy craft, it may not look to far on the map? But it is immense in reality even crossing at the shortest point. The ancient mariners took days to do a 13 to 26 mile trip and it had to be chanced in fair weather. Today boats are abandoned by the smuggling crews in all sorts of weathers.
Most of the worlds navies cannot afford a separate force, so they encompass their smaller vessels to do this work.
Many new tactics are now developed and employed in observing and intercepting, including surprise in the early hours and during storms to get one off guard.

Modelling. Part-Two.
Presents Opened.
Now that we got what we thought we were getting, its time to take out the contents and start to study what to do next? The model world is almost unlimited to making adaptions to what we have to start with and that is part of the great fun of it!
Wither we make our models to show as accurate copies or for the war gaming table, model railway, boat lake racing, flying in garden or field, it is all really to show to close and wider afield. Now with You Tube and Vimeo and the many other free film formats one can show the world from box contents to the finished and working items.
Paints, glues, clays and tools are the start, but many extras can be made with matchsticks, paper mache and also with cardboard. It really is up to each individual to disguise the diorama with what is at hand, instead of spending more money on sometimes disappointing extras.

Aviation Lifters. Part-One.
From civil to Military.
Air freight is one thing, but to lift specialist loads aircraft have been designed for the job. Initially these types of aircraft started off as the heavy bombers of the early years in aviation history and during World War-II (1939-45) they were developed for the movement of mass troops and long range flying boats.
After the second world war there was a demand for the movement of main battle tanks and missiles components and so began the need for bigger and bigger aircraft.
Soviet Russia had its giant Antonov An-22, while the United States developed the C-141 Starlifter, Boeing 747-100-400/8, Globemasters 1-111 and the C-5 Galaxy.
Russia replied with the need for an aircraft to carry its robotic space shuttle Buran and so was born the Antonov An-124 Ruslan and 224 Mirya.

Air Freighters. Part-Two.
World War-II (1939-45).
From 1918 to 1939 aircraft got larger and larger in size and with this were enabled to fly further. It was British Imperial Airways, operating out of London-Croydon airport who took advantage of all of the latest British aircraft types. The Handley Page converted bombers were the height of luxury flying and they had the additional cargo space for mail.
HP 0/400 Twin-engined carried 12 passengers, The Vickers Vimy was similar and both were scrapped by 1924.
By 1928 the Shorts three-engined Calcutta flying boat was in service carrying 15 passengers and two pilots at 110mph. By 1930 the HP42 was capable of 38 passengers and just before 1939, shorts had in service the first 16 sleeper cross-Atlantic flying boat.
It was not until the second world war that there was a demand for mass production air transport and aircraft such as the Douglas DC-3/47 came to the fore. Other large aircraft in the war years were the Shorts Sunderland flying boats, which were a massive improvement on the Handley-Pages.

Fast-Attack Boats.
Gun Boats.
The age of the Gunboat was perhaps in World War-II. (1939-45), when both Nazi-Germany with their E-Boats and the British equivalent deployed similar vessels to work the English/French Channel. The U.S and Japan also deployed basically similar types boasts in the far east and Pacific.
These boats were well armed and could have the advantage of operating in shallow waters, but could also move fast from A to B/A to Z. There role was to patrol and observe, but they became a handy and cheap tool to do other work, such as planting and recovering of individual spies.
Initially they were not as well armed as they are today, and they ran the risk of being spotted and attacked by aircraft.
Today these craft are more larger and have a host of guns, missiles and torpedo tubes fitted. They are popular with smaller navies, such as in the Persian Gulf states. It was he former Soviet Union (Russia) who during the 'Cold War years became one of the largest producers of these types of boats, but it was the British company Vosper-Thorny craft that is perhaps one of the best builders of the Fast Attack Craft type world wide.

Christmas.
In light of a wet Christmas in the U.K
Perhaps everyone across the northern hemisphere has had some ammount of snow, the U.K. has seen very violent storms, winds rain with severe flooding. Instead of sleds, it has been the boats and inflatables to the rescue.
The inflatable, Zodiac and even the standard rowing boat continues to be part of the invaluable tools used for basic search and rescue across the globe, in all types of flood zones. Little and easy to inflate, they can work in tight spots. Speed is also an essential element to small craft used in this role along with depth levels changing suddenly.
I think we sometimes forget so easily about the very little machines that we use around us, that they do thr very simple jobs and roles. We also tend to forget how much, we could not do without them.

Floating Cities.
This would appear to be a new concept?
Currently this is being developed in the Netherlands to relieve the use and price of land. But there are already many waterborne city dwellings found in China and Hong Kong and many other places around the globe.
Many people have chosen to live on boats in Marinas, harbours and on canals, but this new idea plans to commit to floating houses and apartments. With land running out for some countries around the world, this might be a good idea.
Would you want to live on a barge?

Canal Barges. Part-One.
Britain and the rest of the world.
The canal barge and coaster remain a very viable form of transport across the world today, from the River Rhine in Germany to the many rivers of China.
These flat bottomed vessels can move from rivers to man made canals to the sea with ease. Today's shipping is far flung from the early days of invention and development in England, UK.
The UK retains the long barge now almost soley for pleasure and living use. But some river barge industries remain in the river Thames.

Flying Boats. Part-Two.
The days of the flying boats are not over yet?
This is perhaps one of the greatest feats in the aviation world to take-off and land from water. Many early aircraft in the 1920/30's were adapted to have floats, but it was the Shorts Sunderland that became the flagship carrier of the British BOAC.
World-war-II (1939-45) saw a increased demand on all sides for dedicated flying boats, such as the U.S. Catalina, and British Walrus, while several Italian and German types were also deployed. The flying boats were of great use at Sea to attack submarines and proved to be an invaluable tool.
After the war several nations went on to develop their own types of boats. The U.S. the UH-1 Albatross, Japan, the Kawasaki PS-1 and Russia their Beriev family BE-12/15, 606.
Today Canada builds the CL-215/415, while the Russians have developed the first jet powered flying boat, the Beriev A-40 and a civil version the BE-200. Many nations continue to use their world war-II boats and 1950's developments are still flying, such as the Mongoose.

Fishing Boats.
There are three kinds of fishing trawlers/boats, inshore, deep water and production vessels or factory ships.
Today many people are describing the fisherman as the reaper of the sea. But we are also being told by the medical world that fish is a good food for fighting many illnesses, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes, because it contains large amounts of Omega-3 oils.
Fishing has been one of the oldest professions in the world, and for may so called third world nations it is their only source of revenue.
But admittedly the introduction of certain type of nets, factory ships has resulted in over fishing and the decline of certain breed, disease of various kinds, because of the breakdown of the food chain in the oceans.
