The British army and a few others have opted for a new range of light armoured-less vehicles, believing their speed will help them on the battle field. But light vehicles were tried in the past like the British Crusader light-tank and they were of no value with great losses.
Urban environments demand armoured trucks and Jeeps, as commonly seen in N-Ireland and SWAT teams at work in the United States. In fact nearly every country that have their own automotive industry will produce some form of an armoured vehicle.
The enemy on the battle field uses Anti-tank guided weapons, from the RPG to something more sinister. While in the urban situation it will be either a home-made pipe bomb or a nail bomb of which both can kill and cause very serious injuries.
BAE Systems have taken several of the South-African security vehicles from the 'Aparthied days and re-designed them. The Republic of Ireland, Belgium and a few other countries have bought into some of the more basic designed vehicles that suit their UN military standard.

The Snow Plough.
Roads and Rail.
Basically this is a shovel fitted to trucks and locomotives to push soft snow to one side, but these ploughs could also be employed for pushing sand after a storm. The need for this goes back at least two hundred years, with the onset of the the invention of the engine the design has not changed much!
Today the idea of blowing both snow and sand has been added to snow plough or for sand removal. Railways suffer greatly from such obstacles and from wet leaves that can be the cause of both slippage and derailment. Various forms of weed killer and spray trains have also been designed, along with the removal of dust and rubbish in Metro and underground systems world wide,
Switzerland and Italy have lead the way in these specialist type trains and the British in Metro cleaning systems.

Road Trains. Part-Three.
Helping to Deforestation in Brazil and Indonesia.
Logging world-wide is big business, many countries have taken advantage over the last fifty years of growing forestry mostly pine trees of various kinds. The trucks developed for military vehicle transportation after world-war-II (1939-45), were thus employed to this new role.
Traditionally logging was done with horses pulling one log at a time, but these days are now long gone. Many new machines have been developed, even to cut out manpower and trees are even processed and trucked to the various mills.
Brazil and Indonesia are seeing the worlds fastest deforestation, with little or no new growth being introduced. In Brazil deforested land is used for farming, while in Indonesia natural forests are being replaced with Palm oil trees that are not suitable.

Road Trains. Part-Two.
Problems.
The problems with road traffic is the quality of the roads, from Highways to dirt tracks. This is what limits the use of heavy haulage traffic who need to keep on the smooth, rather than getting stuck on broken ground.
Russia, China, America, Brazil and many other better developed nations can take advantage of this type of long distant haulage and there are many new concepts coming on the the commercial market. The moving of machinery is the main need for some road trains, but it can be animals and general goods that would be cheaper than flying or sailing them in?
The one disadvantage seems to be the side moving bus development is still not available to heavy haulage and would be of benefit to expand into countries with worse road conditions?

Easter Eggs.
Transportation of Eggs.
People tend to forget that the egg was one of the hardest commodities to transport, it was easy enough to go from the root to the home with the basket. The problems started initially on the carts and waggons and the age old problem was solved with the development of the egg carton.
The invention of the train demanded the development of wooden racks and waggons designated just for eggs with ceiling vents, these were usually painted white to start with and later blue and white. What had been gained here went on to trucks and vans, as long as the eggs could not move to much they stayed intact.
Today with the cartons, accidents will still happen but new development in controlled cooling allows the egg to have a slightly longer life to enable it to travel longer distances than ever before!

Freezers. Part-One.
Advancement for Humanity.
The ability to freeze goods has given the world a great advantage, perhaps one of the biggest in human history.
Today we have freezers on aircraft, shipping, fishing trawlers, factories and trucks both road and rail cars. Meanwhile various types of goods from meats to flowers can now cross thousands of miles and arrive fresh the same day.
Prior to the invention of the refrigerator ice and cool boxes were it and food could not really be moved very far or kept very long. Flowers really had to be picked fresh and many other things eaten with in at least 24 hours.

Trucks....
They come in all shapes and sizes and we can't really do without them?
The truck, Juggernaut, lorry is truly a most invaluable machine for the movement of all types of goods, from small loads in a local vicinity to big loads across vast distances. No matter where in the world you go, you will find them at work.
Monster carriers are used in modern quarrying and in similar heavy construction sites. In Australia cattle, sheep are moved across distances in road trains. But it is probably ore that is one of the commonest uses found for trucks.
Shipping and trains also play their part for the very vast distances, but otherwise it will be a truck of some description in the local area. With the development of newer types, new engines and better cab design, trucks have come a long way.
But the future for them will be the development of improved fuel, re-performance and new sources of power, instead of diesel, petrol?

New Year 2012/13.
New Year 2012/13.
I wonder what new innovations in the world of machines will be revealed to us this year?
Perhaps if the price of oil and other fuels continues to increase, we may have to turn back to steam trains, trucks, engines and airships?
Is there still a viable future for such machines again?
Hopefully engineers will be using alternative energy sources to power their new ideas and concepts.
